The crochet designs which Mary Card created during the first 40 years of the 20th century have enchanted generations of women around the world, but few have been readily available until now.
Two new pattern books issued late in 2009 have redrawn graphs and expanded instructions. Some crochet skills are required, as taught in my earlier techniques book, which is still in print.

Early History of Irish Crochet Lace tells the stories of the Irish people who created this new and economically important industry at the time of the Great Irish Famine. It also shows in considerable detail what the early laces looked like. More information

I recommend that you read it together with my second book about Mlle Riego and Irish crochet. These two Irish crochet books have appeal for many people interested in textiles, social and costume history, not just crocheters.
Mademoiselle Riego and Irish Crochet Lace takes a close look at the lives and work of the crochet lace designers of the Victorian era, especially of Mlle Riego de la Branchardire. This talented and prolific designer of many forms of needlework has been given the credit for inventing Irish crochet, but his book reveals that she and the other English designers made only a very small contribution to Irish crochet design.
